Problem

Candor Brooks International, in partnership with Development Africa, embarked on a strategic initiative to address a critical gap in Yobe State's education sector. The region faced significant challenges in literacy development, with many teachers lacking the fundamental skills needed to effectively teach reading and writing. The project aimed to empower these educators by providing them with the necessary tools and methodologies to enhance their instructional capabilities, thereby improving the overall quality of education in the state.

Approach

To tackle the identified challenges, a comprehensive and systematic training programme titled "Read and Write with Ease" was developed. The program was meticulously designed to introduce and implement Jolly Phonics—a globally recognized method for teaching literacy—within Yobe State's educational framework.

Key Features of the Program

Result

As Yobe State’s first introduction to Jolly Phonics, the impact of the training was profound. Despite the initial lack of basic literacy teaching skills among many participants, there was a marked improvement in their ability to deliver reading and writing instruction. The teachers demonstrated a strong willingness to learn and apply the newly acquired skills, setting a positive precedent for future educational initiatives in the region.
